Dear students –
I am writing today with two updates regarding fall semester.
First, I am pleased to announce that, following the recommendation of your Student Association President and other students, Rice is allocating funding and support for a variety of new activities that will roll out on campus this fall– examples may include themed outdoor picnics, electronic game nights, bicycling events, and outdoor art activities. Event planners will be encouraged to take advantage of outdoor and online spaces, and organize in ways where physical distancing can easily be maintained while gathering together for some fun. These efforts will supplement many of the activities that normally happen on our campus and will continue in modified formats this fall (through student clubs, academic departments, etc). We appreciate the creative ideas that Anna Margaret Clyburn and her committee put together around student life this fall, and we are pleased to increase support for student events through the Student Center staff. If you or a student organization in which you are involved are seeking support to host hybrid or physically distanced events this fall, please contact the Student Center and Student Activities by emailing email@example.com.
Second, all students enrolled at Rice during the Fall 2020 semester, including those studying in a fully remote format, must read and sign our Culture of Care Agreement. As many of you are aware, our Culture of Care reflects Rice’s values of responsibility, integrity, community, and excellence. The Culture of Care serves to promote and protect the greater good by providing students with a framework for living and working together at Rice, and has remained an important part of our community even during our separation these last few months.
Rice’s Culture of Care will once again be essential in the months to come in order to reunite physically in the fall as safely as possible. As always, the Culture of Care is only as successful as the people who commit to its continued success. In order to carry on the educational missions and core values of our University while minimizing person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 and protecting those most vulnerable to the disease, our 2020-2021 Culture of Care Agreement outlines the behavioral expectations for Rice students in re-opening educational, residential, and other social spaces on our campus. By signing the Culture of Care Agreement, you are agreeing to adhere to Rice’s expectations for face coverings, physical distancing, and social activities.
Please note, this agreement does not apply solely to students who will live on campus – it applies to all enrolled students. Whether on or off campus, it is vitally important that you take active steps to protect your health and the health of others. By embracing our Culture of Care and our shared responsibility to respect and look out for one another we protect ourselves, we protect Rice, and we protect the broader Houston community. Our local health care providers are working hard to keep our community safe in these difficult times. All of us must show respect for these providers by not endangering our own health or that of others and contributing to the high burden of care that our local hospitals and their personnel are providing.
You are required to read and sign all parts of the Culture of Care Agreement by August 7. For your convenience, attached you will find a PDF copy of the Culture of Care Agreement – but in order to sign the agreement, you must do so through our CANVAS system at Rice.
All students have two options for accessing the Culture of Care Agreement in CANVAS:
- In a few minutes, an enrollment email into a CANVAS course will be sent to you. You can click the "Start Course" link in this enrollment email to get into the system. This will take you to a dashboard where you can click "Go to Course" under the Rice Culture of Care Agreement course listing. This will take you through the agreement.
- You can go to catalog.rice.edu/dashboard and sign in using your Net Id and password. This will take you to the dashboard where you can click "Go to Course" under the Rice Culture of Care Agreement course listing. This will take you through the agreement.
Once you have moved through all parts of the Culture of Care Agreement on CANVAS, certifying that you have read and agree to all parts of the agreement, you will be emailed a certificate of completion.
If you have any questions, please contact my office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
