Dear students –
In preparation for the start of the Spring 2021 semester, we have updated the Culture of Care Agreement and are requiring all enrolled undergraduate students to read and sign it prior to the start of classes on Monday, January 25.
Since the circumstances around the SARS-CoV-2 virus remain concerning for our campus and the broader community, please read the document carefully and reflect on why these health and safety measures are important, and how they will shape your behaviors and activities in the time ahead. While the changes made to the document are relatively small and predictable (mostly clarifying already existing expectations – remember that the previous document was drafted during the summer and prior to our fall semester start), the overall message is quite important. Our community fared well last semester, in no small part because of how well all students took responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others.
Now more than ever, we must remain diligent in following all safety precautions and rules for living and learning detailed in the Culture of Care Agreement. As much as a more promising road lies ahead with the rollout of a vaccine, a significant amount of time remains before vaccination rates will rise to the point where we can begin a substantial rollback of the requirements listed in this agreement. I know this posture is not what you want for your college experience – please know that I too look forward to a return to our usual ways of living, socializing, and learning. But, also remember that in following the dictates of the Culture of Care Agreement, you demonstrate your care for yourself and others, and you make it possible for us to carry on the educational missions and core values of our University while minimizing person-to-person transmission of the virus.
As before, this agreement does not apply solely to students who will live on campus – it applies to all enrolled students. Whether on or off-campus, it remains vitally important that you take active steps to protect your health and the health of others.
You are required to read and sign all parts of the updated Spring 2021 Culture of Care Agreement by end of day on Sunday, January 24. For your convenience, attached you will find a PDF copy of the Culture of Care Agreement – but in order to sign the agreement, you must do so through our CANVAS system at Rice.
All students have two options for accessing the Culture of Care Agreement in CANVAS:
- Within the next hour or so, an enrollment email into a CANVAS course will be sent to you. You can click the "Start Course" link in this enrollment email to get into the system. This will take you to a dashboard where you can click "Go to Course" under the Rice Culture of Care Agreement course listing. This will take you through the agreement.
- You can go to catalog.rice.edu/dashboard and sign in using your Net Id and password. This will take you to the dashboard where you can click "Go to Course" under the Rice Culture of Care Agreement – Spring 2021 course listing. This will take you through the agreement.
Once you have moved through all parts of the Culture of Care Agreement on CANVAS, certifying that you have read and agree to all parts of the agreement, you will be emailed a certificate of completion.
If you have any questions, please contact my office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Best wishes on the semester ahead,
Bridget Gorman, Dean of Undergraduates
