Dear undergraduate students -
Congratulations on reaching the end of classes. It has been a memorable year in so many ways, I hope each of you has a smooth path through final exams.
For those of you who will participate in commencement ceremonies next month, please continue to check-in regularly with https://commencement.rice.edu for updated information on the ceremony. I am writing today because there are a few updates I wanted to call your attention to:
First, we have established a mask policy specific to commencement events. Due to the crowded nature of Rice Commencement Ceremonies, all guests will be required to wear face masks when entering and moving about the Rice Stadium, particularly when entering and exiting main gates and walking through concourses. Masks may be removed only when seated in your own group to watch the ceremony. Please note, while we recently announced that masks are generally not required outdoors on the Rice campus, a notable exception is when persons are not able to physically distance themselves from others.
Mask Policy for Graduates: Prior to the start of commencement ceremonies, graduates will gather in the West Quad (additional details to follow). All graduates are required to wear a mask when gathering together in the West Quad for organizing and line up prior to the start of the procession. Provided that they maintain three feet of distance from others, graduates can remove their masks once the procession begins and remain unmasked through the conclusion of the ceremony. While in Rice Stadium, maintain an appropriate distance from others when walking on the stadium field and across the stage to receive your degree.
We all look forward to an enjoyable Commencement, and we appreciate you and your guests maintaining physical distancing and masking protocols throughout the event.
