COVID-19 response weekly update: COVID-19 testing and holiday gatherings

COVID-19 response weekly update

November 16, 2020

This week I have updates on COVID-19 testing and holiday gatherings.

Testing. Over the last seven days, we tested about 4,900 people. Eight people tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Rice’s testing statistics, along with isolation and quarantine data, can be found on the COVID-19 website:

Beginning Monday, Nov. 16, the university is opening the testing schedule for the week of Thanksgiving (Nov. 23 through Nov. 25, and Friday, Nov. 27). Testing schedules for the following week, Nov. 30 through Dec. 4, are also available to allow everyone to carefully plan for tests both before and after Thanksgiving. The scheduling process can be accessed at

If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or believe that you have been exposed to someone who is positive, don’t sign up through the regular testing process. We have a special process for anyone who’s symptomatic. Fill out a health report form and you will be guided through the testing process by someone from the Contract Tracing Team.

For additional questions about testing, please contact the Rice Community Information Center at (713) 348-4224 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.) or

Department / Office Holiday Gatherings. As you plan departmental, student and organization gatherings around the holidays, Rice-sponsored events and gatherings should be held on campus whenever possible rather than at off-campus restaurants, bars, hotels and similar venues. We have a large number of venues on campus, both indoors and outdoors, to accommodate your needs. To request an event space, open-air tent or any other outdoor spaces please visit For additional event spaces on campus or more information contact Hollie Evans in Campus Events at
